Chapter 18

Ardeur Française

The private charter boat from Marseille to Hyères turned out to be operated by none other than my old friend, Pierre Arnoult, a former French foreign legionnaire who, the year before, Clark and I worked with during our mission to trade Ekaterina Norikova for Anya.

He spoke only French and behaved as if he’d never met the six-foot-four-inch American and his friend pretending not to be spies. Once we were well offshore, Pierre’s French became accented English. “My old friend, Chase. Is so good to see you again. Introduce me to your friend.”

“Pierre, this is Hunter. Hunter, meet Pierre Arnoult. He’s a bit of an enigma—a Frenchman who loves Americans, guns, and trading mercenary services for stolen helicopters. It’s a long story, but suffice it to say, Pierre is one of the good guys.”

The two men shook hands, and Hunter said, “It’s nice to meet you, Pierre. I’ve done a little training with the legionnaires in North Africa, and I’ve even got a pair of French jump wings in a shoebox at home.”

Pierre appraised my partner. “You do not look like American paratrooper.”

Hunter grinned. “Nope. I was a cook in the Air Force. Or was it a payroll clerk? I can never remember.”

Pierre launched into a hearty French laugh. “Oh, mon ami, perhaps you were an airborne cooking clerk.”

Hunter pointed at the Frenchman. “Yep, that’s exactly what I was. How’d you know?”

We all shared a good laugh. Perhaps the last laugh we’d have for a while.

“So, it is time to get down to business as you say in America, no?”

“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” I answered. “What do you have for us?”

He pulled a black Pelican case from beneath the console of the boat. “I have for you two of the finest pistols in all of the world.”

He opened the case to reveal a pair of FN Five-seven pistols, a stack of fully loaded magazines, and shoulder holster rigs for each. The Five-seven was capable of piercing most Kevlar body armor and packed a nice punch.

I lifted one of the pistols, examined it carefully, and nodded. “Well done, Pierre. Excellent choice.”

“Merci. I have also for you picks for the locks and throwaway cell phones, completely untraceable. Also inside is five thousand euros. Oh, I almost forgot the best thing I have for you.” He removed the false bottom in the Pelican, revealing a dozen syringes. “This will render a man—even a man the size of you—completely unconscious for half an hour or more. You only need to inject him in a large muscle like the leg, arm, or derriere, and in only a few seconds, he will become weak and no longer able to stand.”

Hunter let out a low whistle. “I guess it’s nice to have friends in French places.”

I asked, “What do we owe you for all this, Pierre?”

“I would love to have another helicopter if you happen to find one lying around, but otherwise, your analyst has already paid for everything, including the boat ride. I am number seven on the speed dial when you are ready for a ride back to Marseille.
